Australian Sports Betting Calendar: What Is On, Month by Month

The Australian sporting year in order, from the September grand finals through the Rugby League World Cup, the Melbourne Cup and the AFL draft, into the Big Bash and back to the football in February.

Quick answer. The Australian sporting calendar has no genuinely dead months, but it does change hands three times a year. March to September belongs to the NRL and the AFL. October and November are the grand finals, the Rugby League World Cup, the AFL trade period and draft, and the spring racing carnival. December to February is cricket, the Australian Open and the NBA, until the football codes come back for the pre-season.

This page exists because most tipping sites go quiet from October and their readers assume there is nothing on. There is plenty on. Here is the year in order, with what actually matters in each block and where to find our coverage of it.

September and October: the grand finals

EventWhenNotes
AFL finals seriesSeptemberFour weeks, eight teams, top four get the double chance.
AFL Grand FinalSaturday 26 September 2026MCG.
NRL finals seriesSeptemberFour weekends. See our finals guide for how the system works.
NRL Grand FinalSunday 4 October 2026Accor Stadium, Sydney.

These are the two biggest betting weeks of the Australian year outside the Melbourne Cup, and they are also the weeks where novelty markets proliferate. The main markets are where any genuine edge lives. Our NRL finals guide covers what actually changes in the numbers once the finals start.

October: three things start at once

Rugby League World Cup15 October to 15 NovemberFixtures, pools and venues
Spring racing carnivalThrough OctoberBuilds to Melbourne Cup week.

October 2026 is unusually crowded. The World Cup starting eleven days after the NRL grand final means rugby league does not stop at all this year, which has not been true of a normal off-season in a long time.

November: the Cup, the draft and a World Cup final

EventWhenCoverage
Victoria Derby DaySaturday 31 OctoberMelbourne Cup guide
Melbourne CupTuesday 3 NovemberFlemington, approx 3:00pm AEDT.

AFL national draft19 and 20 NovemberDraft order explained

November is the busiest month on this list and the one most people assume is empty. The Melbourne Cup alone is the single biggest betting day in the country, and it sits between a World Cup final and an AFL draft.

March to September: the football season

This is where our models actually run. Every NRL and AFL round gets a full set of predictions from the ensembles, published with confidence ratings, and every result is graded publicly afterwards.

Which of these do we actually model?

Rugby league and Australian rules football, and nothing else. Both models are trained on more than a thousand matches each, both publish a real accuracy figure that updates every round, and both show the rounds they get wrong.

For everything else on this calendar we publish structure, format, key dates and how the markets work, because that is genuinely useful and we can stand behind it. We do not publish selections for sports we have not modelled. A tipping site that suddenly has expert opinions on every sport the moment its own season ends is telling you something about its incentives rather than its analysis.

The honest version of the off-season. Betting volume drops in the Australian summer for a reason: the sports most punters know best are not on. Fewer bets on sports you understand well is a perfectly reasonable way to spend December. Nobody needs to have action on every night of the year.

Frequently asked questions

What sport is on in Australia after the NRL and AFL seasons end?

In 2026 the Rugby League World Cup runs from 15 October to 15 November across Australia, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand. The AFL trade period runs 5 to 14 October and the national draft is on 19 and 20 November. The spring racing carnival peaks with the Melbourne Cup on 3 November. From 12 December the Big Bash League runs to its final on 26 January, alongside the international cricket summer, the Australian Open in late January, the NBA and the A-League.

When is the 2026 NRL grand final?

Sunday 4 October 2026 at Accor Stadium in Sydney.

When is the 2026 AFL grand final?

Saturday 26 September 2026 at the MCG.

When do NRL and AFL tips start again?

Both models come back online for the pre-season in February, then run every round from the opening round in March through to the finals in September.

What is the biggest betting day of the year in Australia?

Melbourne Cup day, which in 2026 is Tuesday 3 November. It is the one day where a large share of the people betting are not regular punters, which is also why it is the day worth setting a limit in advance for.

Does TippingEdge tip on cricket, tennis or racing?

No. Our models cover rugby league and Australian rules football only, and both publish a real accuracy record that updates every round. For other sports we cover the format, the key dates and how the markets work rather than publishing selections for sports we have not modelled and tested.
