Big Bash BBL|16: Fixtures, Teams and How T20 Betting Markets Work
The 2026-27 Big Bash starts 12 December and finishes with the final on 26 January. Key dates, the eight teams, and why T20 markets behave nothing like the football codes you are used to.
Quick answer. The 2026-27 Big Bash League is BBL|16. It starts on Saturday 12 December 2026 and runs through to the final on Tuesday 26 January 2027. Eight teams. The tournament opener between the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers is being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the first BBL fixture ever staged in India.
The Big Bash is what fills the deepest part of the Australian sporting calendar. From the AFL draft in late November until the football codes return in February, it is the main event, and it runs almost nightly through the school holidays.

Why T20 betting is different to betting on football
If your betting is built on the NRL and the AFL, T20 cricket will feel volatile, because it is. A few structural reasons why.
Variance is enormous over twenty overs
A twenty over innings is a small sample. One player having an unusual night swings the result in a way that almost never happens in a rugby league match, where scoring is spread across eighty minutes and many contributors. Favourites lose far more often in T20 than the odds intuition you have built on football would suggest, and that is not the market being wrong, it is the format.
The toss carries real information
There is no equivalent in the football codes. At some venues and at some times of day, batting second is a measurable advantage, particularly under lights where the ball can move early and the dew makes bowling harder later. Markets adjust immediately once the toss is known, which means a price taken before the toss and a price taken after it are two different bets.
Venues have their own par scores
A competitive total at one ground is well below par at another. Boundary dimensions, drop-in pitch behaviour and typical conditions vary far more between BBL venues than home ground effects vary in the NRL. Totals markets are priced off venue history, and it is the single most useful thing to know before you look at an over or under.
Team lists move late and matter a lot
International call-ups, overseas player availability and short turnarounds mean BBL squads change through the tournament more than a football side does. One unavailable overseas quick can move a team's realistic chances substantially.
Market types you will see
- Head to head: which team wins. In T20 these are closer than most punters expect.
- Total runs, over or under: priced off venue par scores and conditions, and heavily affected by the toss.
- Top batter and top bowler: high margin markets. Run the price through the odds converter to see how much of it is margin.
- Same game multis: correlated legs, priced accordingly. Our SGM calculator works for any sport, since the maths of combining probabilities does not care what game it is.
- Tournament outright: eight teams, a finals series, and a long season. Prices move a long way on early results.
What else is on over summer
The Big Bash is the anchor, but December and January also bring the international cricket summer, the Australian Open in the second half of January, the NBA in Australian morning time slots, and the A-League. Our Australian betting calendar lays out the whole year, and the football codes return with the NRL pre-season in February.

Frequently asked questions
When does the 2026-27 Big Bash League start?
BBL|16 starts on Saturday 12 December 2026 and runs through to the final on Tuesday 26 January 2027.
Where is the BBL 2026-27 opening match?
The tournament opener between the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers is being played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, India. It is the first Big Bash League fixture staged in India.
How many teams are in the Big Bash League?
Eight: the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder.
Why do favourites lose so often in T20 cricket?
Because twenty overs is a small sample. A single player having an unusual night can swing a T20 result in a way it rarely can in a rugby league or Australian rules match, where scoring is spread across a long game and many contributors. Higher variance is a feature of the format rather than a sign the market has mispriced it.
Does the toss matter in Big Bash betting?
It can matter a lot. At some venues and under lights, batting second is a measurable advantage because the ball moves early and dew makes bowling harder later in the innings. Markets reprice as soon as the toss is known, so a bet placed before the toss and one placed after are meaningfully different propositions.
Does TippingEdge publish Big Bash tips?
Not currently. Our models are built and trained on rugby league and Australian rules football, and we do not publish probabilities for sports we have not modelled and tested. If we build a Big Bash model it will launch with a published accuracy record from the start, the same way our NRL and AFL trackers work.
